The other day, I received an email from someone who was getting ready to make her first Nutrisystem purchase. She asked me “which of the foods or choices are good because I want to make sure that I order foods that I will actually like.” In actuality, most of the choices are pretty good ones, but the answer depends on which of the programs she chose to go with. I’ll explain this more in the following article.

Tasty Or Good Nutrisystem Foods In The Basic Women’s Program: Most of the foods in most of the plans come out of the basic women’s program. What I mean by that is that the vegetarian, diabetic and flex (or part time) Nutrisystem plans will all include foods from the basic program which are prepackaged. All of these foods are relatively decent, but some are better than others.

Most of the breakfast foods are quite edible. (It’s harder to mess up breakfast, I think.) But standouts are the pancakes, the muffins, the scones, and the crunch cereal.

Any of the pizzas are good (although the thin crust is my favorite.) Also, you can’t go wrong with any of the raviolis. The macaroni and cheese is pretty decent. I also really like the risotto and the vegetable lasagna. The fajitas are tasty also.

Generally speaking, I’m not as big a fan or any of the soups or stews, but I wouldn’t order soup or stew at a restaurant either and I don’t cook it at home. You’ll generally be quite pleased is you stick with the pasta and carb type choices, at least in my experience.

The snacks and desserts are all pretty good too. Sure, the portions are smaller and the cakes aren’t slathered in frosting, but the fact that you can have a brownie, shortcake, or a candy bar is aces in my book because some diets don’t offer you that option at all and that fact becomes quite old after a while. You aren’t likely to stick with a diet if you have to deprive yourself on a daily basis.

Nutrisystem Select Choices Are Probably The Best Tasting Foods On The Menu: If you want the best tasting choices on the menu, then the “select” options are it. These are frozen rather than prepackaged foods and they are advertised as being “restaurant quality.” I would have to agree that they are very good. You really can’t go wrong with any of them, but this package is a bit more expensive (about more, if I remember correctly.)

I’ve gotten to a point where I hand pick my foods.

(The company allows you to do this. You just have to chose the custom option.) I do like and enjoy several of the prepacked meals on the basic plan so I will generally order a month’s worth of that. Then, I will add items that I really enjoy of the select menu so that I’m only paying for foods that I know that I’m actually going to look forward to eating. Sometimes, the nutrisystem select line is on sale and I take advantage of that.

All you have to do is look around or tune into the media to know that part time, week day only, or “flex” diets are all the rage. The idea behind these plans is that you can do anything for a short period of time, especially if you are set free on the weekends so that you can get back to enjoying regular eating with your family. Many experts will tell you that the top reason that people don’t stick with diets is because over time, they just become too restrictive. As I said, anyone can do something for a short period of time, but if you have to deprive yourself for the long haul, eventually, you will get tired of this.

I believe that’s why there’s been tons of interest in the Nutrisystem Flex program. The part time, five day per week program allows you to take any 2 days per week off. So, you’re only having to actually “diet” (if you want to call it that) for 20 days per month. Many of the questions that I get about this diet involve it’s cost or price. The low cost is yet another attractive feature of the diet because it’s the cheapest option on the program. I’ll explain this more in the following article.

Monthly Cost Or Price Of The Nutrisystem Flex Program: To be specific, the flex plan is around 0 cheaper than the regular women’s monthly program (where you aren’t taking the days off.) You have to understand though that the basis for this is pretty much because you’re getting less of what you are paying for. Namely, they are only having to supply you with enough foods to eat five meals per day for twenty days out of the month rather than for 30 days. So, that’s around 8 -10 days that you are not having to pay for. The foods on the flex plan are not any different than those of the other plans. The packaging, content, and portions are the same. You are just getting less in your shipment because you won’t need as much.

If you are woman, the base price for the Nutrisystem flex plan is 4.95 each month. This comes out to just over per day. If you are a man, the monthly price on this is 9.95 per month or about per day. Keep in mind though that these prices are before discounts and coupons. The company rarely offers incentives to entice you to try the foods. You can often find a or more off nutrisystem coupon or a decent amount of free food being offered. You can often get this price down to around – per day.

It’s important to note that you do get to chose your own foods if you like (which is called custom menu.) They don’t charge any extra money for this and I believe that this feature is way underutilized. Because eating foods that you actually like is another to ensure that you stick with this.

I often get emails asking how “good” Nutrisystem really is. This is sort of a loaded question. I often ask for clarification, just to make sure I answer what the reader wants to know. Does the writer mean is this diet effective? Is it healthy? Is the food decent tasting? I’ll try to answer all of these questions in the following article.

Is Nutrisystem Effective?: This diet works in a few different ways. First, you’re taking in a relatively low amount of calories (around 1,000 -1,200). Second, the company is careful that the foods contain only “good carbs” and have a high amount of protein. This makes your consumption more “glycemic friendly” and helps to nudge your body into ketosis where it is burning fat rather than sugars.

If you eat the foods that you’re sent and follow the guidelines as to what foods / or sides that you’re adding in, it’s my opinion that you should not have a problem getting in or reaching ketosis.

If you doubt this, you can use ketone strips to check if you’ve reached this level. Getting there pretty much ensures weight loss for most people. The key is to not make unfortunate choices with your sides (or you run the risk or having to start over.)

Still, most people who follow along as directed don’t have any trouble. The bottom line is that the diet is well designed to work. You eat five times a day so you’re not that hungry and you don’t have to count calories or carbs. Most of the food is prepared for you so the only thing that you have to worry about is following the directions and monitoring your progress.

Another big plus in my opinion is that they offer totally free counseling and support.

This would cost a lot of money if you were paying for it. And, the counselors are very knowledgeable, professional, supportive, and appropriately motivating without being too pushy. I’m not the type of person that likes to work on personal issues with others, but once I got over my reluctance, I found this very helpful.

Is Nutrisystem Healthy?: A lot of people worry that this is a starvation diet. It really isn’t. 1,000 – 1,200 calories per day is not really reaching dangerous levels unless you start cutting or skipping meals, which the company obviously does not advise. (Keep in mind that you have to eat regularly to stay in ketosis so you don’t want to do this anyway.) All of the foods are fortified with vitamins and minerals and you eat fresh add ins at every meal to ensure that your body is getting what it needs.

Of course, there has always been controversy about low carb diets, but the good news about this one is that you aren’t eating high cholesterol foods like meats and fats. The diet’s foods have been modified to be low in carbohydrates and high in protein, but you eat regular foods and snacks like cereals, chips, and desserts. You’re not eating pork skins and beef jerky all day so you don’t have to worry about that.

Is This Diet Convenient? How Does The Nutrisystem Food Taste?: This is a pretty low maintenance diet. Most times, the food is prepared for you and you just have to add in a dairy, fruit, or vegetable. Each meal will give you a suggestion as to a good side, but you can make you own choices. Still, you’re not asked to do any major shopping or food preparation, so this one is very high on the convenience scale.

In terms of taste and variety, I believe that this diet is better than most. There are 170 choices and you really do get to eat pizza, burgers, tacos, ravioli, cereal, and chocolate cake, etc. (Granted, the pizza isn’t Uno’s, but it’s not awful either.) The company has recently added in some frozen entrees which I think are really quite good. And, they have some that they say are like restaurant quality food that is better than most diet food I’ve tried.

Ava’s Nutrisystem Review Website features videos, tips, coupons (0 off or weeks of food for free), comparisons to other popular diets, information on the diet’s counseling, and FAQs related to success on this diet.

I get a lot of emails asking about the Nutrisystem desserts. Of those, many questions are about the cookies. People want to know how they taste, what flavors taste the best, how many choices are available, and how many calories and carbohydrates they contain. I will address these things, as well as tell you which are my favorites and which taste the best (in my opinion), in the following article.

Nutrisystem’s Chocolate Chip Cookies: OK, so this isn’t very original. There are tons to chose from and yet my favorite is this boring standby. I like these because of the chocolate chips and because the texture is nice and chewy. This one has 60 calories from fat and 13 grams of carbs.

White Chocolate Chunk: Do you see a theme here yet? Maybe chocolate? So this cookie has white chocolate, but it’s still very good. And it also has hazelnuts which gives it more depth.

This one is bit less chewy and more buttery than the one mentioned above. It too has 60 calories from fat, but 15 grams of carbs.

Nutrisystem Almond Biscotti: OK, this is technically not a cookie, but boy is it good. I like it because it is a very generous portion and is larger than the other options. And, it just taste very good. The almonds are very generous and plentiful and it’s awesome with milk (skim of course) or coffee. This one also has less calories from fat and less carbs (60 and 13 respectively.) There is also a macadamia nut biscotti offered but I like the almond version better.

Oatmeal Raisin: This one taste about how you would expect it to which is pretty classic. What I like best about this one is that it has a nice chewy texture and at only 40 calories (from fat), it’s among the most diet friendly of the bunch.

Peanut Butter: What’s nice about his one is that in addition to containing peanut butter, there are many nuts in the product too. This one is a bit more crumbly in texture and has nice 4 grams of fiber.

Double Chocolate Almond: I love this one. It’s a chocolate cookie with chocolate chips and almonds. I find it to be the most filling of the cookies but it also has the most carbohydrates at 18.

Overall, all of the cookies have a decent taste. There is no weird textures and no fake sugar after taste that you get lingering with a lot of diet foods.

The choices and portions are relatively generous and I really appreciate that there are so many dessert options to chose from. Many diets just don’t offer these kinds of dessert or sweet options, much less ones that actually taste good.

Want to see a list of all of the desserts, foods, and cookies? The Nutrisystem Celebrity Review Website offers information about the diet, photos of celebrity weight loss, a complete food list, the latest Nutrisystem coupons / specials and a free ebook.

When people write to me asking for information about the “Nutrisystem products,” few seem to realize that there are so many choices available. There are several options for both men and women. And there are several specialty or deluxe options too. I will discuss the many choices that you have on this diet in the following article.

Nutrisystem Products For Women: With in the women’s category, you can chose from several packages. There is the basic women’s (which I believe is the most popular.) This diet runs around 9 per month (but there are always coupons) and has you eating five times per day. You will eat three meals and a snack plus a dessert. You are eating the food that the company provides, although you are asked to add in healthful, fresh sides.

There is also a vegetarian option (it’s the same idea as the basic plan but the foods are only made up of meatless options like veggie lasagna, veggie fajitas, etc.) Additionally, there is what is called “silver” for women over sixty.

Finally there is a diabetic plan which provides a package which is “glycemic friendly” and meant for folks with type two diabetic (it’s called the “D” program.)

Nutrisystem Products For Men: I’m not sure why, but the men’s programs don’t seem to enjoy as much advertising as the women’s. We all know that Jillian Barberie is the women’s spokesperson, but the guy celebrities like Dan Marino, Don Shula, and Chris Berman just don’t get as much attention.

However, there is a men’s line. And it basically runs a lot like the women’s but the packages provide a touch more calories and protein.

As with the women’s, under the men’s umbrella we have the basic, vegetarian, silver, and diabetic. (Note: You can chose your own foods within any of these programs by placing a custom order. This doesn’t cost extra and this is also true of all the women’s programs too.)

Nutrisystem Flex: This is really a new line and it’s been very well received. The flex plan is the lowest priced plan at just over 0, but the reason for this is that it’s sort of a part time plan. You take two days every week off. The foods are basically the same, but you don’t need as many of them. You can take any two days off, although most people will take advantage of this on the weekend.

The Select Plan: There’s another plan that works for both men and women and it’s called “the select” plan because the foods are frozen and are touted as being restaurant quality. This package is a bit more expensive, but some of the foods are exceptionally good. Some people think it’s worth it to pay the extra for this and some will just order some of their favorite select foods individually with their regular order.

Other Nutrisystem Products: Vitamins, Exercise Equipment, Mind Set Makeover, Etc.: The company doesn’t limit itself to just food. If you go to the a la carte section of the site, you’ll see that they also sell vitamins, work out videos, recipe books, excise bands and equipment.

One product that I can really recommend is the “mindset guide.” This is sort of a behavioral / psychological guide that takes you week by week and offers support and questions to help you determine (and then change) your sabotaging behaviors and beliefs. Weight loss is not all about calories. It’s psychological tool and I found this resource to be very helpful. The company does offer free counseling, but the mind set book is a good resource to use in addition to this because you can pick it up and come back to it when you need to. I’ve also seen it offered for free sometimes.

Ava’s Nutrisystem Review Website features a full food and product list, videos, tips, coupons (sometimes 0 off or weeks of food for free), comparisons to other popular diets, information on the diet’s flex program and the free counseling, and FAQs related to success on this diet. She also offers a free ebook (“Getting The Most Out Of Nutrisystem”) to help you get started. You can visit her at http://celebrity-diet-review.com/.

The other day, I received an email from a reader who wanted for me to break down all of the costs associated with nutrisystem for her so that she might know exactly how much she would be spending for everything. She was comparing this diet to others like Jenny Craig, Medifast, and Weight Watchers, so she wanted to know what she’d be spending on food, membership fees, groceries, counseling, etc. I’ll give you a break down of costs in the following article.

The Food Is The Main Cost With Nutrisystem: Basically, you’re just going to be spending money on food and there are many ways to order this. The cheapest way, if you are figuring out your cost per meal or item, is a monthly package. Since the writer was a woman and did not mention any health issues (like diabetes) or special omissions (like being a vegetarian) I’m going to use the women’s basic as an example for this article.

This basic plan runs just a little over 0 for the whole month.

This will give you enough to cover eating five times per day for roughly 28 days. You can go with sort of a sample package where you get meals made up by the most popular foods or you can customize the foods you want (and don’t want) at no extra costs.

Now, if you don’t want to make the commitment of a monthly plan, they do allow you to buy the meals separately or “a la carte,” but this is much more expensive in the long run. You’ll pay anywhere from .90 (for snacks) to .00 (for the deluxe, restaurant dinner meals.) This does add up, but this option is available if you just want to sample.

A happy medium between these two options might just be the flex plan which only gives you enough nutrisystem meals for only 20 days.

This plan is just over 0. You’re really not getting a price break with this, you are just paying for less food. Still, it gives you some samplings and you are not paying nearly as much as you would if you brought 20 days worth of meals on “a la carte.”

With all of these estimates, I did not include coupons, which can really help. The company does offer you either free food or around – 0 off your entire monthly order, depending upon what time of the year it is. Note that these larger coupons aren’t generally used for the individual item orders. Also, don’t forget to calculate the additions. You’ll want to add in a small, fresh, side each time you eat. This is typically a piece of fruit, a salad, a pudding cup or cup of yogurt, etc.

Additional Costs For Nutrisystem: Counseling, Membership Fees, Etc.: This is all free. As I said before, you are only charged for the food. There are no additional charges. Basically, once you create an account, you are a member and you get counseling with this membership without having to pay extra for it. So, whatever the cost turns out to be for your food, this is what you pay and nothing else. It helps to get coupons for this food, but either way, it’s typically much cheaper than what you would pay if you attempted to buy groceries and then cook diet food for yourself.

Perhaps it’s because we’re on the verge of seeing more and more cold weather. Or, maybe people are starting to evaluate diets in anticipation of New Year’s resolutions. Whatever the reason, I’m starting to get a lot more questions about the Nutrisystem soups. So, in the following article, I will go over some of the more popular soups (that are included in many of the packages,) tell you how they taste and will also discuss the nutritional information, ingredients, and texture of some of them.

Nutrisystem’s Chicken Noodle Soup: This is probably one of my favorites because it’s such a comfort food staple and it’s among my favorite soups even when I am not on a diet. There are relatively generous amounts of both chicken and noodles in this. The noodles are the curly and fat kind – not the skinny short ones, which I appreciate. This entree only has 120 calories and an impressive 10 grams of protein.

There is 0 grams of sugar. I’m not sure how they do this, but this is what the label says.

Vegetable Beef Soup: This is probably the second most popular soup on the menu. You might suspect that this is heavy on the vegetables and light on the beef, but it really isn’t a bad ratio in reality. It contains beef, carrots, celery, potatoes, corn, and both green and black beans. This is a pretty nice tasting soup, but if I could change one thing, it would be that this item contains both green and black beans. Maybe my mom wasn’t really with it, but she never included black beans in her vegetable beef soup. So, I pick these out and it’s not a big deal.

Nutrisystem’s Mexican Style Tortilla Soup: Speaking of black beans, I love them in this product. This soup is pretty spicy, but I love that about it. It also has corn tortillas right in the product as well as red peppers, corn, black beans, and rice. I actually sometimes stir fat free sour cream in this one, which makes it really delicious. I’m not sure you would like this if you don’t embrace spicy food, but if that’s not a problem, this one is a winner. There’s a few more calories in this one (150) and a little sugar (4 grams,) but it’s worth it.

Minestrone Soup: I like the noodles in this one. They are pretty generous with the Italian spices here and they even suggest a little Parmesan cheese on top. It’s good, but there’s no meat and at 160 calories, I like the tortilla soup a bit better. I wouldn’t turn this one down though.

Nutrisystem Black Bean Tortilla Soup: The color of this one looks nasty, but it’s good, especially if you add salsa. There is something about this that tastes like a bean burrito to me. It’s a thicker so I usually add a bit of water. At 190 calories, it’s the most caloric soup that I know of on this diet. But still, 190 for an entire lunch is not that bad.

Nutrisystem Ham And Beans Soup: I did not think that I was going to like this one, but honestly, it taste a lot like what my mother used to call Spanish Bean soup. The ham comes off as having an almost sausage taste, which might be why I am thinking this. The beans are not as over powering as I feared they would be. There aren’t any noodles in this, (which I would often call a minus.) But, this soup is a bit heavier than the others (which might be why it’s 180 calories.) I use this one in my rotation quite a bit.

The Cream Soups (Broccoli And Tomato Cream:) I’m going to save some time and say that I really do not like cream based soups. Therefore, there is no way I would like these even if they were good. I like chicken or tomato based broths rather than a cream base, so I just can’t evaluate these fairly. However, the fact that they manage to get a cream based soup in at only 130 calories is pretty impressive.

Nutrisystem’s Noodles With Chicken And Vegetables: I’ve saved the best for last here. And, I’m not sure if the company actually considers this to be a soup because it’s a bit thicker. But, it tastes like chicken pot pie without the crust. Plus, it’s only 150 calories but it taste to be much more.

I get a lot of questions from people asking me if NutriSystem is really healthy or if being on is “dangerous.” I think that folks sometimes see the dramatic weight loss on celebrities like Jillian Barberie and Marie Osmond and think that this must be some kind of very low calorie or starvation diet. It really isn’t. It doesn’t require a prescription or a doctor’s recommendation (although common sense should obviously be used.) I’ll explain why I believe that NutriSystem is safe in the following article.

I Believe That You Get Enough Calories On NutriSystem: First off, this is not a grossly restrictive diet, in terms of calories. This one does not fall into the category of only 800 calories or less which often requires that you are supervised by a doctor. The typical calorie intake on this diet is more between 1,000 and 1,200 calories per day, which is typical of most “diets” today.

Why I Believe That The Ketosis Process With NutriSystem Is Safe: This diet works like a lot of other low carb or “glycemic friendly” diets work.

You are limiting the carb to protein ratio. You’re eating more “good” carbs and you’re taking in a higher amount of protein. This puts your body into ketosis which means that your body starts feeding off of fat rather than off of carbs. In terms of weight loss, this is a really good thing. But, there is always debate as to whether ketosis is safe or not. There have been many studies on this and two in particular have pointed to the fact that ketosis was not only safe, but it also improved cardiovascular health, muscle mass, and insulin levels. (The two studies I’m speaking of are called “A Ketogenic Diet Favorably Affects Serum Biomarkers for Cardiovascular Disease in Normal-Weight Men,” and “Body Composition and Hormonal Responses to a Carbohydrate Restricted Diet,” respectively.)

Still, it doesn’t hurt to ask your doctor if you are unsure or if you notice any changes in your body that are troublesome to you. It’s my experience that this state of ketosis is pretty gentle and not worrisome, but as I said before, you should always use your own common sense.

The Nutrition Of NutriSystem: I sometimes have people who write me and say that they don’t buy into NutriSystem because they can’t believe that any diet which allows you to eat pizza, burgers, fajitas, and cake would actually work. Well, what they don’t understand is that these foods aren’t your typical comfort foods like you would make at home if you weren’t worried about your weight.

Obviously, they have been modified to be lower in calories and carbs and higher in protein. And, they are all fortified with vitamins and minerals. Most have about 20 – 30 percent of many of the recommended daily values of the nutrients that your body needs. I know that in my case, sticking with this diet has actually improved my nutrition because before, I wasn’t adding in fresh fruits and vegetables at every meal and I certainly wasn’t maintaining a favorable carb to protein ratio.

It’s very hard to get the formula right on your own, in my experience. It’s so much easier to let the experts do the work and research.

All in all, my experience has been that NutriSystem is safe. I’m not a doctor or specialist, but I’ve never felt sick or weak or odd on it. It’s been around and has been researched and tested for a very long time. They do provide free counseling and resources so you should be able to get any question or concern that you have answered. And of course, you should never hesitate to involve your doctor if you are concerned about your health.

Ava Alderman is the author of the free ebook “Getting The Most Out Of NutriSystem,” which includes a full food list of all of the foods offered, detailed information about how to be successful with this diet, a three weeks free coupon, motivation, and tips to ensure the most dramatic results.
